Patriot Hearts: A Novel of the Founding Mothers, by Barbara Hambly
Patriot Hearts is a perfect read for the Fourth of July holiday. Three of the women portrayed in the book were the wives of U.S. Presidents George Washington, John Adams, and James Madison while the fourth was the slave and reported concubine of the widowed President Thomas Jefferson. The book not only explores the lives of Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Sally Hemings, and Dolley Madison, it weaves through the narrative their sometimes surprising interactions. This historical novel brings to life notable women of the Revolutionary War era and the Early Republic.
