First Monday Movies - In a Lonely Place - March 1st

Screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart) becomes a murder suspect when a hat-check girl is murdered after leaving his apartment. His lack of emotion raises the suspicions of the Beverly Hills police, putting the lead detective in a tight spot, since he and Dix used to be Army buddies. Dix’s neighbor, Laurel Gray (Gloria Grahame), provides him with an alibi and they are drawn together. But his volatility frightens Laurel and her distrust makes Dix paranoid. Is the strain of the murder investigation ruining their chance at love, or is he really a dangerous maniac? In a Lonely Place has been described by the critic Kim Morgan as "one of the most heartbreaking love stories ever committed to film." Directed by Nicholas Ray (1950/93 mins)
