Learning Lab continues in March, April and May!

Do you want to learn a new language or improve your writing or computer skills? Do you need to study for a test like the SAT or GED? Do you want to learn how to create a website or brush up your resume?


You can do all of these with online courses offered by the library. Join us in the Excelsior Learning Lab to get help on selecting a course and to use our computers to get started. Bringing headphones and a flash drive are recommended but you can get started without.

Dates and time: Fridays, March 1, 8, 22 and 29; April 4, 11 and 18; May 3, 10 and 17; 3-5pm

First Monday Movies @ Excelsior, March 4, 6:30-8:30pm

Cocoanuts (1929, 96 mins) is our March movie is the first of four Marx Brother's movies in this year's lineup. It stars Zeppo, Groucho, Harpo and Chico Marx as well as Oscar Shaw and Mary Eaton and was directed by Joeph Santley and Robert Florey.

During the Florida land boom, the Marx brothers run a hotel, auction off some land, thwart a jewel robbery, and generally act like themselves.

First Friday Tutorials: Online Learning @ SFPL

We are starting our Learning Lab on Friday, February 1st. Every Friday in February the Learning Lab will be open from 3-5pm. You can take free online classes and language courses using our training computers. Watch the tutorial below to see what kind of courses are offered and if you need more help or if you want to give it a try, join us in the Learning Lab!



First Monday Movies @ Excelsior, February 4, 6:30-8:30pm

The movie for February is Love Me Tonight (1932, 89 mins) with Maurice Chevalier and Jeannette MacDonald; directed by Rouben Manoulian.

In this musical a Parisian tailor begins a whirlwind romance with a princess after pretending to be a member of the nobility himself.

Love Me Tonight was elected to the National Film Preservation Board's National Film Registry in 1990.

Lion Dance Performance, Saturday, February 2, 10:30am

Celebrate the New Year and watch the San Francisco Jing Mo Athletic Association perform a lion dance and give martial arts demonstrations. For all ages!

And just in case you are wondering, the Year of the Snake starts on Sunday, February 10!

Five Fabulous Women Artists of the 1800s, Monday, January 28, 7-8:30pm

Join us for a slide show by local artist Marlene Aron of the beautiful and inspiring art of five women artists of the 1800s: Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Marie Bracquemond, Eva Gonzales and Camille Claudel.

These artists exhibited their works in the Salon and the World Exposition in Paris, three of them showing their paintings alongside Pissarro, Degas, Renoir and Monet in the first Impressionist exhibitions in the early 1870s. They painted their family, children, friends and lovers, along with scenes of gardens, forests and landscapes. Take a journey through the artistry and lives of some of the movers and shakers of the Impressionist movement.
